San Giovanni degli Eremiti

There is so much of the citta of Palermo to explore.  Luckily we can on occasion.  Our most recent explorations took us to see the Chiesa di San Giovanni degli Eremiti with its stunning red domes and mesmerizing gardens.

Originally built as an abbey to the Royal Palace around 1132. Later turned into a monastery until 1464 and slowly declined until the 16th century when it became a secular church.

Washington palms and orange trees in the gardens. Also originally there were orange trees in the garden during the 12th century.

The inside is simple.  The towers show an Arabic flavor.

It appears there was probably additional art on the walls but this bit was all that was remaining.

Perhaps a fireplace? The church has gone over numerous changes and restoration mostly recently in the 19th century.

A simple but decorative path from the stones.

This portion of the garden contains kumquat and pomegranate trees.

You can see the Arabic style in the arches.

The well was dry, but a few people tried to make wishes.

I appreciate every bit of the restoration that made it possible for our enjoyment.

Right next to San Giovanni degli Eremiti is a church with a bell tower. For 2 euros we could climb to the top of the tower and overlook San Giovanni and its gardens, plus we had an amazing view of the city of Palermo.

The stairs were narrow with low ceilings thus the hard hats.  I counted and hit my head 11 times on the way back down even with crouching.

Overlook into the gardens and the red domes of San Giovanni degli Eremiti.

Looking west to the Cathedral of Palermo and Mount Pelligrino

Looking northish to the Gulf of Palermo.  How many church towers can you count?

Looking southish to the mountains that surround Palermo on all three sides.  See our snow!

There were 4 bells, they all rang by computer and ring on the quarter hour. We were there at 11:45, Craig asked if we wanted to wait another 15 minutes.

Panoramic view with 3 of the bells

The 2 euros were worth every cent.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of Year - December Happenings 2016

December and Christmas as a missionary is different, terrific, busy, and wonderful.  Here is a picture journal of our month.

On a drive to the airport to pick up a missionary we had a little extra time so the scenic route took us past the Mediterranean

The Caltanissetta group meets in the missionaries apartment, it needed some sprucing up

This is the primary room, Bagheria Anziani and Caltanissetta Anziani hard at work

Anziano Garrett was working hard too painting while snapped pictures

On our walk to the open market for some fruit we saw this overlook toward the Palermo Cathedral

For FHE one Friday we went to a home for Anziani (Elderly) and sang Christmas carols

After caroling everyone came back to our home for cinnamon rolls, egg casserole, and orange juice

Just a rainy morning commute

Our December Sunday nights found the missionaries and Young Adults singing carols at Teatro Politeamo

Another December FHE was visiting the world famous Palermo Food Festival

Marco is one of our regular attendee at FHE and he walked home with us after the Palermo Food Festival

Teatro Massimo does it up right for Christmas - those are dozens of poinsettias

We attend 3 different church units so we enjoyed Christmas Church activities with each unit, this is Palermo 2nd Ward

The missionaries serving Palermo 2nd made up the Nativity for the evening

Afterwards with our friend, Floriana, we went to an outdoor light and music show at Fontana Pretoria

On the way home from church at Palermo 2 we saw the tiniest ape I have ever seen - it is an actual vehicle not a toy

For the Palermo 3rd branch, along with the Sorelle and Aloiso family we helped prepare their Christmas meal

Anziano Mercado plus some of the Palermo 3rd branch members

After eating our Christmas dinner with the branch we got a picture

We made it to Mistretta for P-day, a St Stephen's Feast, and a visit with Nino

After lunch we made a hike up to the top of the Mistretta Castle overlook with some awesome Anziani

The village of Mistretta

EVERY TIME at transfers, every time one of our missionaries moves to a new place, we took time to have a goodbye lunch with Sorella Bonzo

These 2 fine Anziani were heading north to their new locations and we were too for an Young Adult Conference so we gave them a ride which part is on a ferry.

At the Young Adult New Year's Conference these 2 sweet young ladies became my instant friends

Michol and I are strengthening our friendship

During the YA NYE Conference we took a walk around the city of Fiuggi and saw this Christmas tree display made from recycled soda bottles

As you can see we didn't stop much but we did eat a lot.  December had us smiling.
