Photo Journal #16

April 23, 2015 - Succulents

Almost every day when I am on my walk I pass different grouping of plants and flowers.  Right now in the spring most of the flowers that are blooming are the succulents.  Often when I think of succulents I think of prickly and not so pretty cacti but you might be surprised to see quite a few pretty flowers.

I love the variety and colors.  It really makes it such a treat on my morning walks.

All about me # 6

What was your childhood like?

I am the youngest of 4 children.  I was the baby of the family - does that say it all?

Curtis, me, Katherine, Greg - what a baldy I was

I had a good childhood. I played, I read, I bicycled, I tagged along with my sister, I was teased by my brothers, I worked in the yard, I climbed trees.

Let me tell you about a few of those things:

My sister Katherine is just 15 months older than me.  She was my first friend.  Any of the neighborhood friends were first her friends and then they became my friends.

Katherine and I lived on the corner of Fir and Holly Streets in Shelley, Idaho.  Holly Street was covered with children.  I think almost every house had kids living there and we would often get together on warm summer nights and play games like "Capture the Flag", "Olly, Olly, Oxen Free", and "Red Light, Green Light".  It didn't matter what house we played out because we would take over the street and any front yard that was available without fences.  We stayed out late - it was pleasant and joyful.

I climbed trees.  Our backyard had a huge willow tree and lots of fruit trees.  I would climb as high as I could in the willow tree and settle in with a book to read.  I would also climb as high as I could in hopes of not being seen so I would not have to do my chores. Sometimes I was found and sometimes I wasn't.  I remember taking a small 2 x4 and hammering it in somehow to the apple tree (this was after the willow was taken out) to make a sitting area for myself.  It became another reading spot in the tree but never high enough or enough branches to hide ever again. Do you think that was why the willow was taken out?

My brothers teased me sometimes until I would cry but they were also my protectors.  My oldest brother, Curtis, was allergic to bees but I recall a time when there was a swarm of bees outside and he somehow swatted them away so I would not get stung.  He also slept by my bed one night after he forced me to watch a scary show so I would be safe from whatever nightmares that might come.

Greg, Curtis, me, Katherine - I finally got hair

A few stories - maybe more to come.

Photo Journal Week #15

April 17, 2015

This week took me to northern California with a sweet treat visiting my grandchildren.  I flew up in a 4 seater 1 engine plane thanks to my friend Carl Morrison.  While there I made sure I kept up with some exercise by running and walking along the Contra Costa Canal Regional Trail.  The trail runs through Concord, Walnut Creek, and Pleasanton about 19 miles.  Although I only traveled about 3 or 4 miles on it, I found it so pleasant.  It is an easy, flat trail with safety features of crossing lights, connecting parks, and beauty treasures.

Photo Journal Week #14

This one is a quick and short journal because it is late and I am tired, but I didn't want to miss the week.

On Easter Sunday, Craig and I took a short walk along the Santa Margarita Trail but we started on the east end.  We got different views and experience but one concern the trail was covered with poison oak almost the whole way.  We were lucky and careful and didn't come in contact with any.  If you do choose to walk along the trail just know and be prepared.

We were delighted and surprised to find water in the river.  It is a short and sweet little trail.

Photo Journal Week #13

Lucky week #13 - I can't believe I have done this for 13 weeks.  I have to admit it I am proud of myself.  This week I take a little walk around my community of Fallbrook.  Fallbrook is known for its avocados - we are the Avocado Capital of the World - after all. But you won't find pictures of avocados today, if you want a great guacamole recipe though check this one out from my other blog; Like Mother, Like Daughter - Guacamole.  Today you will find an array of artwork that is scattered throughout the community.  Most of this is found on Main Street or Mission Road (they run parallel to each other) and some on Alvarado by the Fallbrook Art Center.

As see on Alvarado Street

You will find artwork on the streets, surrounding the Village Square, adoring the library - yes, even plants growing on the roof, on buildings, on bank and school grounds, in the parks, and just on the corner.  Fallbrook is an artist's paradise.

Does this encourage a visit?
