Favignana Island - Part 1 - the adventure

What do you do when you are invited to visit a island in the Mediterranean Sea by the fun loving missionaries? You say yes, of course, and jump at the activity.

Anziano Melling is always thinking of great things to do and since he had visited Favignana Island a month ago, he wanted to share the beauty and fun with the rest of us.

Luckily for us, pday was revised a couple of months ago and we can start our day as early as 8 am. So off we were driving to Trapani with Sorella Erickson and Sorella Acerson to catch the ferry to Favignana.  It is about a 30 minute ferry ride across the sea about 4 miles.

Once we arrived we had to take our first picture of the day.  As you can tell I am the wimp of the group with 3 layers, a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and jacket.

We rented bikes to explore the island, 6 of us on electric bikes and 2 die hards with traditional bikes.  I have currently fallen in love with the electrical bike and have started my plead with Craig for the next 9 months to get me one when we return to the states.

Luckily we still remembered how to ride a bike.  Electric bikes are the coolest.

It was a beautiful cool day. The island is relatively flat but does have the one mountain that seems to cut it in half.  The island has a square mileage of 7.6 and is described to have a butterfly shape.  We went from one side to the other by a tunnel through the mountain.

Our first stop was the Punta Sottile Lighthouse orginally built in 1860 and it looks like it is on its 3rd or 4th reconstruction.

Of course it was time for more pictures!  The ocean was beautiful, the rocks unique, and we were having fun.

Next stop,a little cove with rentals on one side and the ocean on the other.  We met another cute couple visiting the island on bikes and they helped out by taking our picture.

At the lighthouse, Guiseppe the dog, started to follow us.  He ran along side us for almost the rest of the day. I guess that is the problem of naming him.

We went back through the tunnel to the first side but turned right instead of left.  That took us to this beautiful overlook of the clearest, turquoise water I may have ever seen in my life.

This is actually one of my favorite pictures from the day, go figure.

After about 3 hours of riding and picture taking and breathing in the fresh air, we headed back to the town of Favignana for lunch.  We packed a couple of simple things like carrots and water but thought we could buy something on the island.  That was a little miscalculated because everything closes during pranzo -  lunch time.  There were a couple of places where pizza and gelato were purchased.

After lunch we returned our bikes and went to the pier to wait for the return ferry to Sicily.  Anziano Garrett was nice enough to hotspot all the missionaries so they could read their emails from home and send pictures home.

Each week we are blessed to see something new and each week I think this is the best experience ever.  Sicily has so much to offer and see.
