Living Coast Discovery Center  -

 

Aimee and her little guy came to visit us for a few days and it was purely delightful.  One of the fun things we did was go visit the Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista.  It is right off the 5 and really easy to get to. I remembered taking Anthony and Aimee when they were young, like 25 years ago and Aimee was two.  I had been wanting to go back and see if it was as I remembered.  It was even better with a few upgrades. But it was still pretty low key and simple.   

Some of the exhibits were the turtles (they have a feeding time you can enjoy but we had been there already a couple of hours and it was nap time).  There was a shark and ray exhibit too. We happen upon a driver in with the sharks while he was cleaning their tank (this made them skittish and we were splashed a few times) We also were there doing the ray and shark feeding time.  The rays were crazy excited about being fed and even jumping up to get their food.  You can reach in and two finger touch the rays, C didn't seem nervous at all to do this.

One of the expansions was the aviary area.  You could walk among the birds and see several in their enclosures.  C especially like the burrowing owls because he could see them up close and the water fowl enclosure.  He might have wanted to join them in their pond.

There were a few hands on and informative exhibits like the mulching demonstrations (C wanted to check out the worms).  Statues, pictures, and posters about life on the marsh, the water fowls,and other creatures that live there.

Probably my favorite thing to do was the walking trail from the Center to the ocean. There were a few sea bird view spots plus a couple of one way trails to the ocean and back onto the main trail.  We had a nice view of the Coronado Bridge and San Diego Harbor.  C's favorite thing though was probably the military helicopters flying overhead every half hour or so. 

If you are in the area or from San Diego I think the Living Coast Discovery Center can be a nice side trip.  Read more here about a possible morning or afternoon there.
